The purpose of this site is to match audio tags to specific audio codecs and to provide the audio codecs as freely available downloads where it is possible.

What is an audio codec? Multimedia files that contain some kind of audio in principle always uses an audio codec. An audio codec is a small software component that can translate between the (often compressed) format in which audio is stored in a file into a raw format that is sent to the audio card of the computer to be played back.

What is an audio tag? An audio tag is an identifying code for a given audio stream/part in a multimedia file. This code describes/defines which audio codec was used when the audio stream was created - and thus also which audio codec is required in order to play it back (decode).

Audio tags that are unlinked has not been matched to a specific audio codec yet. Head over to the audio tags page to get a better overview of which tags are used by which audio codecs.

News 07/12/2007: Implemented a few minor changes. 01/31/2007: Added a bunch of extra audio tags and codecs. 01/28/2007: Tweaked the design a bit. 01/27/2007: Updated the rating/popularity of audio codecs to be based on percentage. 01/26/2007: Small design updates, moved the search field to its own page. 01/25/2007: Minor fixes. The popularity rating will be updated once per day. 01/24/2007: Recreated the site. Audiotag.org is now based on the smarty template engine.
